Abstract     Infection develops in 50 to 70 percents of patients with of necrotizing pancreatitis and is associated with substantial morbidity and mortalily. Because of the severity of infection, antibiotic prophylaxis is recommended in all patients with necrotizig pancreatitis. The antibiotics used for the treatment and prophylaxis of infected necrosis should cover enteric bacteria and penetrate well into the pancreatic tissue. Fluoroquinolone and imipenem fulfill the criteria, the efficacy of imipenem was proven in clinical studies as well. Selective decontamination of digestive tract may be used for prevention of infection in necrotic pancreatic tissue as well.
