Abstract     Lyme borreliosis is complex multisystem infection caused by at last three human pathogen Borrelia strains: B. afzeii, B. garinii, and B. burgdorferi sensu stricto, named together B. burgdorferi sensu lato. Borreliae are motile spirochetes 5 to 30 micro m long, they have 0.2 to 0.3 micro m in diameter, and 3 to 10 coils. Strains differ regarding to the protein profiles e.g. kind, amount and molecular weight of the expressed proteins, and can be observed as antigen heterogenous bacteria. Borrelial genom consists of linear chromosome and different number of linear and circular plasmids. Great number of wild and domestic animals are considered as borrelial reservoir. Ticks of the Ixodes ricinis complex are the main reservoir of Borrelia species and are important for human pathology.
