Abstract | Lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow) is a frequent complaint in primary care, the incidence is estimated at 4-7 per 1000 adult patients per year. Many authors sustain, physicians should ackowledge that painful overuse tendon conditions have a non-inflammatory pathology. Conventional treatment includes corticosteroid injections, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, analgetics, physical therapy or a wait-and-see policy. Corticosteroid injection provides the greatest short-term relief but is associated with high rates of recurrence in the long term. This may be atributable to damage to the tendon or overuse as soon as symptoms subsided. At long-term follow-up physiotherapy becomes the best option, but many patients need repetitive treatments. In some patients advice and pain medications periodicaly seem to be equaly effective. | |
