Abstract     Objective. The assessment of spontaneous body movement of newborns from video recordings is a completely nonintrusive diagnostic method that has not been used in Slovenia until now. In this contribution an evaluation of the method, including the recording and the evaluation of recordings is presented. Possibility for distinguishing between healthy and neurologically damaged newborns is discussed. Methods. The spontaneous body movements of 6 healthy and 7 potentially damaged newborns was recorded. Their body movements were later evaluated according to two qualitative and one quantitative criteria. Results. The spontaneous body movements of healthy and neurologically impaired newborns differ in quality as well as well as in frequency of appearance of different movement patterns. Conclusion. The evaluation of recorded spontaneous movements of newborns is a simple, nonintrusive and reliable method for early detection of possible central nervous systems disfunctions. This results represent a starting point for forthcoming more comprehensive studies.
