Abstract     Constantly increasing abuse of illicit drugs among Slovenian drivers indicates that the abuse of drugs is very likely increasing at the worlc place, too. Therefore adequate testing should be available to all iustitutions dealing with occupational medicine. Prelinminary tcsting can be carried out by existing biochemical laboratories in health institutions. But only few if any of them could afford expensive insti-umentation and perfonn sophisticated confirmation analyses. As Slovenia is a small country it is also unwise to spread analyses over to many different laboratories. Department of Toxicology at the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Ljubljana already has many years' cxperience in detennination of illicit drugs, first of all fi-om analyses of urine and blood samples taken from traffic participants. By exchanging the experience and the knowledge we can contribute to the establishment of chain of custody procedures (sampling, testing, storage of samples, etc) and of analytical standard operational procedures, to the interpretation of preliminary testing results and by taldng part in the education. Toxicological laboratory can also perform recommended confirmation analyses on adequate instrumentation (GC-MS). Those are especially important for identifying drugs of abuse and interfering substances.
