Abstract     Hyphenated high performance liquid chromatography-thermal lens spectrometry (HPLC-TLS) was applied to the determination of carotenoids in four phytoplankton species. Satisfactory separation of diadinoxanthin, diatoxanthin, and other carotenoids was achieved by isocratic HPLC elution providing 40-80 times lower LOD, compared to UV Vis detector. Besides the interconversion of diadinoxanthin to diatoxanthin, changes of other minor carotenoids under different light conditions were possible to follow. The isocratic HPLC-TLS provides sufficient sensitivity and selectivity for studies of photochemical processes in marine phytoplankton involving pigments, which occur in traces.
