Abstract     Early medical rehabilitation (EMR) of elderly patients after the lower limb amputation is described in this article. Elderly patients in common are more and more aware of life quality in older days and especially after lower limb amputation do not accept being left in a wheel chairforgood. Therefore prosthetic care of elderly patients becomes increasingly actual. The progress in prosthetic technology and increasing number of transtibial amputations have additionally changed the attitude towards prosthetic care of elderly. The loss of lower limb in elderly patients results in profound physical and psychological consequences. Loss of central walking pattern and progressive flexion contacture of the stump, depression and resignation being the most common. Adequate early medical rehabilitation with immediate post-amputation prosthetic fitting, followed by school of walking, successfully prevents the threatening complications and ensures successful definite prosthetic fitting and complex rehabilitation. In planning EMR of elderly, multifactorial risks have to be considered. The main goal of EMR is to get the elderly out of bed to stand on both legs. MR of elderly patients after lower limb amputation is a therapeutic chain, which starts with patient's preparation for surgery and ends with including the patient into his previous way of life. The most important links are adequate surgical treatment and aggressive EMR, both being an unsubstitutional background for successful prosthetic care and complex MR. Lower limb amputation is not a capitulation of medicine on nehalf of the injury or disease any more. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters).
