Abstract     Physiological changes and frequent diseases accompanying aging decrease functional ability of the elderly and thus limit their selection of physical activities. Therefore, the present study was aimed at developing a program of physical exercises which would affect the strength, coordination and abilities of the elderly. Decreased physical strength, parallel diseases, poor coordination and a higher risk of injuries were taken into account. It was expected that with improvement, the elderly would become more independent in daily activities and the risk of falling would decrease. The targeted physical activity program improved the subjects' lower-limb muscle strength and the flexibility of the shoulders, the subjects walked longer and faster and achieved higher vital capacity. The test of functional range was used for clinical assessment of balance and the results showed improvement, although not statistically significant. The program of physical activity was combined with advice on a healthy lifestyle. A large number of overweight subjects indicated the inappropriateness of diets for the healthy elderly in nursing homes. The present study did not find any statistically significant differences in the values of cholesterol, KS, blood pressure, BMI and WHR after the conclusion of the three-month program. The period was probably too short to indicate any significant differences. The program showed beneficial effects of targeted physical activity for the elderly, including at a very high age, and confirmed the fact that it is never too late to start.
