Abstract     As a result of prolonged educational periods in which an increasing number of children and young people are involved more time is spent in school. School as an institution and in the physical sense plays an important role in health promotion. When laying down a compulsory education the state should take care that school offers children the best environment possible, with no harmful external influences, promoting psychological wellbeing and motivation. The article describes the characteristics of the growing-up period in children and young people> reviews possible harmful effects resulting from school as well as suggestions for their elimination focusing mainly on environmental factors. Educational process and the psychological state of children in schools, which are also two very significant factors influencing school hygiene, are not discussed.
