Abstract     Drinking water is a life sustaining food consumed by all of us. It is also an ecosystem with living and multiplying microorganisms and therefore a potential source of infection. Water is an excellent solvent and as such can absorb various pollutants, thus physical-chemical factors can endanger human's health through drinking water. Children are especially endangered due to their developmental physical and mental characteristics. Drinking water in schools is influenced not only by the water catchment area but also the reservoir itself, the treatment of water and the general distribution system. An influencing factor is also the internal distribution system. To enable the control of risks connected to drinking water consumption, it is necessary to be aware of the quality of the water supplied to schools, the quality of the internal distribution systems and the possible effects from any or all of its parts on drinking water as well as the way drinking water is used in schools.
