Abstract		The article discusses the historical implications, epidemiological, pathogenetic and clinical characteristics of poliomyelitis which is a typical disease associated with the degree of higher hygienic standards. The paper is focused on the paralytic forms of the disease in particular, the preventive measures and treatment options. Yaccination with liveattenuated vaccine is also discussed.
Summary		V prispevku so predstavljene zgodovinske, epidemiološke, patogenetske in klinične značilnosti poliomielitisa, tipične civilizacijske infekcijske bolezni. Pozornost je namenjena paralitičnim oblikam okužb, možnostim njih preprečevanja in zdravljenja. Poudarjen je tudi pomen cepljenja z živo virusno vakcino.
