Abstract     Slowly we are beginning to recognize once again that construction of big central systems with extensive engine and electrical equipment is not the only and even less so the most favourable solution for waste water treatment, but that it is worth considering instead the potentials of nature itself and treating the waste water efficiently as close to its source as possible. The use of natural systems in the process of protection and restoration can be expressed with the word ecoremediation, as it combines detoxification and remediation of the environment with the means of all biotic and abiotic components of the environment. One of the methods applied in ecoremediation are different sorts of constructed wetlands, from spacious wetlands and smaller lagoons with free water surface, to interconnected beds planted with wetland plants with a subsurface water flow, which are also most frequently used in Slovenia.
