Abstract     Background. In schizophrenia, cognitive functions, such as perception, attention, learning, memory and psychomotor ability are most often impaired. Among them, the most prevalent abnormalities are those of attention, information processing as well as impairment of working memory. The purpose of this study was to evaluate attention, information processing, working memory, learning and fatigue in patients during an acute relapse of schizophrenia and in patients with chronic stable schizophrenia. Primary objective of the study is to assess the effects of olanzapine and risperidone therapy on the cognitive response to simple and complex stimuli in the framework of reaction time paradigm in patients with an acute relaps of schizophrenia and in patients with chronic schizophrenia receiving classical antipsychotic drugs. Methods. Our study included 41 hospitalised patients with an acute relapse of schizophrenia and 22 patients with chronic schizophrenia that were hospitalised in order to be included in a rehabilitation programme (all inclusions compliant with the DSM N criteria). Twenty-one healthy controls were also included in the study. After one week of receiving classical antipsychotics patients with acute schizophrenia were randomised into two groups. In the first group patients were receiving risperidone 4 mgJday and in the second group they were given olanzapine 10 mg/day in fixed doses for the first week and then risperidone 4-6 mg/day or olanzapine 10-20 mg/day in flexible doses for the following 7 weeks.
