Abstract     Fractures of the calcaneus are rare injuries. If fracture of the calcaneus is untreated or badly treated, the patient will become seriously disabled. On the other hand, treatment is quite difficult, and present a real challenge. Complete diagnostics (plain radiology and computed tomography), knowledge and skills in combination with modern technical possibilities are the basis for successful outcome in the majority of fractures. Nowadays, only fractures without dislocation and fractures with local or general contraindications should be treated conservatively. Dislocated fractures (both intraand extra-articular) should be treated operatively. Complete reconstruction of the joints (80 % of fractures are intraarticular!) and of the shape of calcaneus is prerequisite for successful outcome. Open reduction followed by internal fixation with plate and screws through extensile lateral approach is the method of choice for most of the fractures. So called "minimal osteosynthesis" is rarely used. The paper will give the insight into diagnostics and contemporary treatment modalities for the fractures of the calcaneus.
