Abstract     Vitamin C has been used in cosmetic and pharmaceutical skin care products since it has many favorable effects on the skin. As an antioxidant agent, vitamin C can scavenge and destroy reactive oxidizing agents and other free radicals. Because of this capability it represents an important protection against UV induced damage. Vitamin C also improves the elasticity of the skin and reduces wrinkles by stimulating the synthesis of collagen. By suppressing the pigmentation the drug influences the complexion of the skin. The use of vitamin C in products is limited due to its low stability. It is more convenient to use vitamin C derivatives, for example ascorbyl palmitate and ascorbyl phosphate salts. Both derivatives demonstrate an improved chemical stability, but differ in hydro-lipophilic behaviour, which determines the ability of the drug to permeate the skin.
