Abstract     Food allergy is usually IgE mediated. Prick skin tests are the simplest, fastest and chip way to confirm slgE. When using in-vitro tests for IgE we have to bear in mind that the correlation between concentration of slgE and the severity of the disease is weak. On the other hand the concentration of slgE is a predictor of clinical importance of senzibilization. Allergy tests are frequently false negative as allergenic proteins are denaturated during process of extraction. False positive tests are due to crossreactivity. Many healthy people have specific IgE against food. Advise about food avoidance should not rely only on positive results of allergy tests. Total IgE have very limited diagnostic value. Specific IgG and tests of cellular immunity are of questionable diagnostic value.
