Abstract     The latest antiepileptic drugs allow the epileptic patient to live a relatively normal life and protect the pregnant woman from convulsions. However, they may at the same time present a risk for the fetus, due particularly to their teratogenic effects. The physician is facing the serious dilemma of deciding when to treat the pregnant women with epilepsy and with which drugs, knowing that convulsions in untreated epilepsy may present an even greater risk than the toxic effects of drugs. At the Maribor Teaching Hospital Departement of Perinatology, we carried out a retrospective review of the medical files of 69 infants and their mothers who had given birth at our institution between 1.1.1998 and 31.12. 2002 and whose history included epilepsy. In this chosen group of neonates we wished to establish the incidence of some known effects of antiepileptic drugs (AED) in utero, such as intrauterine and postnatal growth disturbance, congenital malformations, bleeding in the neonate, feeding problems and withdrawal symptoms. We therefore divided the neonates in two groups. The first included 32 neonates of epileptic mothers who had not taken AED during pregnancy, the second included 37 neonates of epileptic mothers with AED therapy during their entire pregnancy. Beside epilepsy and AED during pregnancy, no additional risk was noted in the investigated group. In the investigated sample of woman, who had given birth at the Maribor Departement of Perinatology in this five year period, the prevalence of epilepsy was 0,7%. In the whole group of neonates of epileptic mothers, who had given birth at the Maribor. Departement of Perinatology in the five year period, we found 7 growth-retarded neonates (10,14%), 11 neonates with subependy-mal intracranial haemorrhage (15,9%), 3 neonates with congenital malformations (4,3%), 6 with feeding problems 88,6%), 4 cases of withdrawal symptoms (5,8%).
