Abstract     Since a child's conception, on the way from being a cell to becoming a perfectly developed individual, a child undergoes many different, but equally important processes such as growth and development. Therefore pediatric dentists need a broad knowledge on the somatic growth and development of children in order to be able to recognize abnormalities. Normal growth and development are only possible provided that the child is healthy in order to be able to build tissue and absorb the required nutrients from food. Our most important task is to take care of the health of children by preventing physical and psychological illnesses and traumas and by discovering and treating diseases. By doing so we protect the children in every possible way, maintain the social development of children and inform as well as educate their parents. Especially parents with small children need constant help and counselling, so that they can cope with the pressure from society and recognize the responsibility of being a parent. The most important goal of a pediatric dentist is to acquaint the parents with the importance of dental health and the responsibility to give the child everything which is important for optimal growth and development, and, later on, for a healthy lifestyle. The basis of all prevention programmes is the cooperation with the parents. We have to provide personal, practical and positive advice and knowledge for the parents. Often there is compromising involved, but a compromise must not be based on guilt, because guilt causes the parents to search for apologies rather than solutions to their problems The goal has to be clear, because cooperation can be a problem if the expectations are too high. During our everyday work, we have to be aware of the fact that our children are our treasure and that we have to protect their rights, as well as their health.
