Abstract     Normalising and thermomechanical rolling are widely used processes in hot rolling mills. Since the mechanical properties of the steel wide strips depend on their microstructure, the detailed and objective characterisation of the microstructure is essential for developing new steel grades with better parameters. The existing stereological methods and the developments in the field of image analysis enable to describe the ferritic phase much more accurately than earlier. However it is not easy to select the appropriate parameters among the large variety of morphological characteristics. We can not find a single morphological parameter that describes perfectly every microstructure, so we have to select a group of the useful parameters that both characterises together the given structure and correlates the mechanical parameters of the investigated steel. During our investigations we have tried to find such parameters and evaluated their usefulness characterising the microstructure after controlled temperature rolling.
