Abstract     Because of cooling conditions, eutectic cementite may be present in as cast iron. When this occurs, the manufactured components must be subjected to a graphitization heat treatment during which metastable cementite decomposes. As part of a study aimed at characterizing the overall kinetics of the graphitization process, the present work was devoted to the comparison of the decomposition kinetics cementite in the form of plates and rod-like eutectic cementite. It was found that the relative fraction of these two cementite forms does not change during most of the phase transformation. Accordingly, it is concluded that the decomposition kinetics should be the same for both cementite shapes.
