Abstract | This contribution aims at ascertaining the ability of a random model for porous microstructures to portray all the geometrical characteristics of a real, observed, porous medium. Towards that goal, 2-D synthetic binary porous sections are generated from a porosity value and an autocorrelation function (ACF) evaluated on a conventional petrographic thin section of a sandstone. The achieved synthetic samples are shown to resemble the actual sandstone due to: 1. the richness of the structural information carried by the ACF and 2. an unexpected structural noise produced by the "practical" use of the random model. | |
