Abstract     Objective: To determine antimicrobial resistance rates among Streptococcus pneumoniae and Streptococcus pyogenes in respiratory tract isolates. Methods: From January to September 2001 and 2002, eight Slovene microbiology laboratories isolated 1,485 strains of S. pyogenes and 1,141 strains of S. pneumoniae from respiratory tract isolates. Susceptibility to several antimicrobials and phenotypes of resistance to macrolides and lincosamides were determined. Results: All strains were susceptible to vancomycin. Three phenotypes of macrolide resistance were found. Results for S. pyogenes: All strains were susceptible to penicillin. The resistance rate to tetracycline was 7.7%, to erythromycin 5.7% and to klindamycin 2.5%. Results for S. pneumoniae:17.3% of strains were intermediate and 1.4% resistant to penicillin. The resistance rate to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole was 25.9%, to tetracycline 11.4%, to erythromycin 11.5% and to clindamycin 8.3%. In both species, large differences were found among the regions. There were also differences among isolates from different patient populations: outpatients vs. hospitalized patients, younger vs. older patients, isolates from 2001 vs. those from 2002. Conclusions: The rates of resistance to the tested antimicrobials and the established differences will serve as the starting point for our future work.
Summary     Namen: Pri izolatih iz dihal ugotoviti delež odpornih sevov vrst Streptococcus pneumoniae in Streptococcus pyogenes proti nekaterim antibiotikom. Metode: V osmih slovenskih mikrobioloških laboratorijih smo v prvih devetih mesecih let 2001 in 2002 iz dihal osamili 1.485 sevov vrste Streptococcus pyogenes in 1.141 sevov vrste Streptococcus pneumoniae. Pri sevih smo določili občutljivost za izbrane antibiotike in Fenotipe odpornosti proti makrolidom. Rezultati: Vsi sevi so bili občutljivi za vankomicin. Našli smo tri fenotipe odpornosti proti makrolidom.
