Abstract     Voice and speech are two main teacher's tools. Their quality depends on several aspects including speaker's habits and individual abilities. Students - future teachers do not get much knowledge about proper voice hygiene. In the present paper, the instructions how to use voice properly and the mistakes that should be avoided are described. These mistakes can cause voice disorders. The data on different researches about voice disorders among (future) teachers are presented. The text includes some facts about rhetoric for teachers, which are useful in their daily work. The aims of the research are to find out the quality of teacher's voice and speech in class and to discover their habits that are connected with the quality of their voices. The research took place in one of the primary schools in Slovenia. The teachers were recorded on videotape during their teaching in order to get information about their voice and speech. The same teachers filled in an inquiry about their voice and habits. The results of the research show that voice qualitiy is an individual characteristic and illustrates the level and quality of voice usage. It is possible to avoid hoarseness and other voice disorders by proper voice hygine.
