Abstract     In this papers the authors discusses the relationship between dysphagia and speech disorders. Dysphagia is a swallowing disorder characterised by difficulty in oral preparation for swallowing and/or for moving material. from the mouth to the stomach and problems in positioning food in the mouth and in the oral manipulation preceding swallowing, including, sucking and chewing. The wide interest of speech - language pathologists in swallowing disorders indicates that increasing numbers of clinicians are treating this disordered behaviour in various populations ranging from infants to the elderly. Assessment was divided into preswallowing procedures and direct swallowing assessment procedures. Prewallowing procedures including a discussion of history - taking and the oropharingeal motor and sensoryexamination. Methods discussed includedmanual assessment, videofluoroscopy, manometry, ultrasound and scintigraphy. The relationship between speech and swallowing is fairly well established in patients with head and neck cancer and other populations with and organ damage. Despite the frequent concurrence of speech and swallowing disorders in neurologically impaired individuals, limited information is available regarding the relationship between the two functions.
