Abstract     The causes for voice disorders can be organic or functional. In the majority of cases both causes are intermingled. In 200 dysphonic patients (163 adults, 37 children) the most frequent reasons for their voice disorders were muscle tension dysphonia (30.5%); vocal fold nodules (28%), fieinke's edema (16%), and laryngitis (12.5%). In the majority of patients at least one negative factor adversely affecting voice quality was detected: laryngeal inflammation in 54%, gastroesophageal reflux in 26%, thyroid gland disorders in 28%, inappropriate speaking habits in 29%, and smoking in 10%. The team approach is recommended in the treatment of a dysphonic patient The improvement of his/her voice and speech techniques, the acquiring the ability to master stress and tensions, and the treatment of accompanying diseases must go on simultaneously.
