Abstract     Laryngectomy is the only successful mode of treatment in the patients with advanced laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancer. The goal of speech rehabilitation is to find a newsource of sound forspeaking. Oesophageal speech is still the best way of alaryngeal communication, but the success of mastering it differs in the patients. We compared two groups of patients, who had been operated for laryngeal and hypopharyngeal carcinoma. The quality of oesophageal speech was evaluated. Acoustic analysis of voice samples was performed. Patients treated forhypopharyngeal cancer were significantlyless successful in mastering oesophageal speech than the patients with laryngeal cancer. Acoustic analysis of the voice samples did not show significant difference. Larger defect of the tissue, narrower pharyngeal canal, scars in the region of pharyngoesophageal passage probably impede the acquirement of oesophageal speech in patients operated for hypopharyngeal carcinoma.
