Abstract | Next to mammography, breast ultrasound (US) is the most important imaging diagnostic tool for revealing breast diseases, primarily in younger women, in dense and complex breasts, in high-risk women and in case of nonconclusive mammographic findings. It is based on the use of powerful US devices equipped with high-frequency transducers of peak frequencies between 8 and 10 MHz, and on different examination techniques. Highly sensitive Doppler (color and powerDoppler) increases the possibility of also revealing small and nonpalpable carcinomas, thus improving US sensitivity for nonpalpable carcinomas. Sonography plays an important role in local and regional staging, demonstrating intraductal spread and multifocality, better demonstrated by three-dimensional imaging. It can easy guide fine needle aspirations and larger biopsies, including vacuum-assisted breast biopsy as well as preoperative wire localization. | |
