Abstract     The implementation of widespread mammographic screening has resulted in the discovery of a large number of nonpalpable lesions requiring tissue sampling. The ability to perform these biopsies percutaneously rather than surgically has multiple advantages. There is considerable cost reduction of operating room time. Due to the smaller volume of tissue removed, morbidity is decreased. No cosmticakky deforming scarring occurs and no architectural distortion is seen on follow-up mammograms. Imaging guidance biopsy of nonpalpable lesion should be performed stereotaxically for mammographically visible lesions and sonographically for lesions visualized by ultrasound. If a lesion is visualized equally well by both methods; in individual cases the choice of guidance will be based on the imaging characteristics of the lesion, lesion location, breast configuration and the experience or preference of physician or patient. Moreover, the physician must understand which benign lesions may be associated with carcinoma and require surgical biopsy.
