Abstract     In inflammatory bowel disease, in genetically predisposed individuals both environmental (infectious, luminal bacteria) and endogenous factors (barrier function) induce immune responses of the intestinal mucosa that are aberrant in their activation or their regulation. The interaction of all components is required to eventuate the expression of the disease: genetic predisposition, immunoregulatory defect, exogenous and endogenous factors.
