Abstract     The antiphospholipid syndrome defines the clinical association between antiphospholipid antibodies and a syndrome of hypercoagulability or thrombophilia, where vascular thrombosis and/or recurrent pregnancy losses occur. Antiphospholipd antibodies comprise a broad family of antibodies including lupus anticoagulants, anticardiolipin antibodies and more recently recognized subgroups. They may be found in patients with no underlying disease (primary antiphospholipid syndrome) or associated to various connective tissue disorders (most commonly systemic lupus erythematosus), autoimmune diseases, malignancies, infections and drugs (secondary antiphospholipid syndrome). The optimal treatment of these patients is not clear. Current treatment strategies rely primarily on anticoagulant therapy, but there is no concensus about the duration and extent of prophylactic antithrombotic treatments. We present a case report of 25 years old female with antiphospholipid syndrome secondary to systemic lupus erythematosus, who developed thrombosis of inferior vena cava with thrombus extending to right atrium. The thrombus was successfully removed by surgery.
