Abstract     Backgmund. The aim of the study was to evaluate the efficacy and safeness of LV. sufentanil continuous infusion for postoperative pain control after major surgery. Methods. 47 patient with a mean age of 55.7yrs (ranged of 19 to 78) and mean body weight of 69.7 Kg (ranged of 63 to 90) undergoing major surgery were studied. During general anaesthesia a continuous infusion of sufentanil via elastomeric device (LV2 Baxter Deerfield-USA) was started at 8 mcg /h . Neither before nor at the end of surgery skin incision infiltration with local anaesthetic was performed. At the end of surgery, after tracheal extubation and until 48 hours post-operative. (every 8 hrs), mean arterial pression (mAP), heart rate (HR), pulse oximetry (SpO2) , pain scores (resting and dynamic VAS), sedation (Ramsay score), itching, PONV and supplemental administration of sufentanil (rescue dose of 5 mcg with a lock-time of five minutes when VAS score was more than 5, for a maximum dose 15 mcg/h and 50 mcg within 24 h) were evaluated.
