Abstract     Cytogenetic biomonitoring at experimental sites near some highways in Slovenia was performed using onion plants as bioindicators of short-lasting in-situ exposure and naturally growing plants as bioindicators of long-lasting exposure to environmental pollution. A relationship was established between the duration of heavy traffic on particular road sections and the degree of damage to plant genetic material. The frequency of chromosomal aberrations in the onion was higher than in autochthonous plants, indicating its great sensitivity for the screening of clastogenicity of environmental influences. In spruce and other perennial plants growing spontaneously on experimental sites, cytogenetic damage increased in correlation with the duration of traffic, but only at sites with more than 20 years' traffic influence, indicating that plant sensitivity to environmental impact could usefully be applied to the continuous biomonitoring for hazard assessment in natural habitats.
Summary     V citogenetskem biomonitoringu v bližini avtocest v Sloveniji smo uporabili čebulo za bioindikacijo učinkov kratkotrajne izpostavljenosti in naravno rastoče rastline kot bioindikatorje dolgotrajne izpostavljenosti vplivom onesnaženosti okolja. Ugotovili smo, da je stopnja poškodovanosti rastlinskega genetskega materiala na poskusnih lokalitetah povezana s trajanjem prometa na posameznih odsekih avtocest. Pri čebuli smo ugotovili večjo frekvenco kromosomskih aberacij kot pri trajnicah, spontano rastočih na izbranih poskusnih rastiščih, kar kaže na njeno veliko občutljivost za klastogene dejavnike v okolju. Povečanje obsega citogenetskih poškodb pri smreki in drugih spontano rastočih trajnieah smo ugotovili le na rastiščih, ki so pod vplivom cestnega prometa 20 let ali več. S tem je nakazana uporabnost rastlin za kontinuirano sledenje genotoksičnih učinkov vseh dejavnikov v naravi za oceno njihove ogroženosti v okolju.
