Abstract     OBJECT: Shoulder pain is often present in hemiplegic patients after stroke. Diminishing the pain contributes importantly to the success of the rehabilitation. PURPOSE: The aim of the study thesis was to test the effect of pressure therapy on diminishing shoulder pain in hemiplegic patients after stroke. Duration of the effect of the therapy were searched for. METHODS AND SUBJECTS: In the research seventeen patients were included, seven of them forming the control group. On the members of the experimental group daily pressure therapies (lasting 20 minutes), were applied during the ten day research. The degree of pain was assessed using VAS scale and by measuring ROM of the shoulder. Statistical analysis was based on nonparametric methods. RESULTS: While no statistically significant differences in the values of the observed parameters of the second and last (tenth) day of the research were found, improvement of all observed parameters immediately after daily massages was proved. The positive effect of the pressure therapy was limited in time and as such did not last till the next day. No periods with significantly different changes in values of observed parameters than average were found during the ten-day research. CONCLUSIONS: The effect of the pressure therapy was proved to be of short-term only. Factors that would affect the effect of the therapy were not detected. The use of the pressure therapy for diminishing shoulder pain in hemiplegic patients after stroke thus seems not to be reasonable.
