Abstract     Introduction: Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) is a quite widespread condition, especially in the young and active population, and may cause a considerable impairement or in the worst case handicap for the whole life. In spite of the great attention, which is paid to PFPS, its aetiology has not yet been enlightened. There is also an ongoing dispute about recommendations for physical therapy of this condition. PFPS has been defined as a group of conditions with the common symptom of patellofemoral pain. Researchers do not often take this fact in consideration not using classification systems. The rules of scientifical methodology are often ignored. Objective of the article: description of risk factors for the formation of PFPS and recommendation of behaviour patterns to prevent PFPS. Methods: Literature review. Survery of literature, data bases of libraries and web pages. The chosen articles deal with aetiology and physical therapy of PFPS. Results: In the management of PFPS prevention should be included the avoidance or removal of shortening of the following muscles, taping and joint posting should be used for prophylaxis of overuse as well as the sepwise increase of difficulty of exercise. Conclusions: For the evaluation of the proposed management of PFPS prevention prospective cohort research in the normal population, who is not exposed to extraordinary physical stress is especially needed. Authors propose to include the prevention of PFPS in the health education in sport clubs, schools, faculties and in the army, since incidence for PFPS is especially high in the young and active population and is still increasing.
