Abstract     In 1993, the Institute for Rehabilitation of the Republic of Slovenia acquired the necessary knowledge on silicone technology. The Institute can now produce high-quality aesthetic silicone prostheses which can be manufactured for patients after partial finger or hand amputations. Silicone prostheses for patients after partial foot amputation have also been produced at the Institute. Silicone prostheses can also be manufactured for the patients who need an aesthetic prosthesis due to the damaged part of the face. Silicone hand orthoses for wrist immobilisation and silicone insoles can be made by using silicone technology. Nowadays, silicone orthoses for compression therapy of scar tissue can be manufactured. Currently, silicone is the only material that allows for the production of prostheses with a natural appearance. Such prostheses not only improve the appearance but also assist in achieving a better function. They offer significant psychological support to the patient. The psychological factor is most noticeable in patients with a damage of the face. Each prosthesis must be made individually for each patient. Only thus can we ensure effective fitting and appropriate aesthetic transition between the prosthesis and the healthy body part. Each prosthesis is dyed individually. Nowadays, the use of silicone is present in all fields of orthopaedic technology.
