Abstract     The purpose of the workshop is to introduce the basic characteristics of tui-na massage as one of the special forms of traditional Chinese medicine and its possibilities to use it in the field of physiotherapy. In the last few decades we have witnessed several attempts to use and to unite knowledge and experiences of official medicine and the so called »alternative« medicine, with the intention to achieve higher quality of patients' medical treatments. Some forms of medical treatment, which used to belong to traditional medicine, are nowadays a part of official medicine. Furthermore, today specialists of traditional medicine are using the most up-to-date ways of diagnosing before deciding for a therapy. Also patients themselves are more commonly using traditional methods of medical treatments. »Tuio means pushing, »na« means embracing. These are two basic manipulations, but in clinical practice approximately 20 manual methods and 16 ways of manipulations are used. The result of each metod is relaxation of muscles and cords, abolition of cramps and pains, relaxation of adhesions, abolition of blood stagnation, improvement of blood circulation, abolition ofpathological factors, cleaning of canals for an undisturbed cirčulation of energy and warming of canals. The basis for the use of tui-na massage is a special effect, which is provided by the use of a particular manipulation on meridians, collaterals and acupunctural points. Tui-na massage works preventively, strengthens the immunity system and contributes to a better general condition. It gives very good results at functional damages and injuries. Tui-na massage is especially successful in preparing sportsmen for efforts and accelerating recovering after them. Indications for the use of tui-na massage include fields of internal medicine, surgery, gynecology, traumatology. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters).
