Abstract     Guidelines are being drawn up in an attempt to put theory into practice. Practical guidelines can improve the quality, appropriateness and cost-effectiveness of healthcare, as well as serve as educational tools. Clinicians may use guidelines as an information source and for quality assessment of patients' care and health outcomes. The design of interventions to implement them in clinical practice should be conformed to local situation. We should be aware of the fact that the guidelines do not only serve to regulate overuse, but also to avoid underuse and reflect also social, economic and other local factors. These guidelines should serve to identify what is the right thing to do, whether the procedures are being carried out properly and how we are checking whether we are performing them correctly. Slovenian national guidelines for preventing hospital-acquired infections were developed by a multidisciplinary working group appointed by Ministry of health. Medical directors and Hospital infection committee representatives of Slovenian hospitals were participating in the group discussion and modification ot the draft guidelines.
