Abstract     The specific and non-specific defense mechanisms of cancer patients impaired due to the disease; therefore, these patients are more prone to infections. Surgical site infections are a common complication in cancer patients after surgery. Risk factors are numerous and are related to the patient and surgical intervention. This may result in a longer hospitalization, higher costs of medical treatment and higher mortality rate. A retrospective study of a group of patients in the intensive care unit after major elective operations in 2002 revealed 23.92% of infections. Most infections were organ/space surgical site infections. The most frequently isolated bacterium was Enterococcus faecalis.
