Abstract     Hospital-acquired pneumonia is the second most frequent nosocomial infection with the average crude mortality of 30% - 40%. Clinical and microbiological diagnoses are important in order to apply an adequate antibiotic treatment. In mechanically ventilated patients, clinical diagnosis frequently leads to false-positive and false-negative interpretations because entities other than pneumonia may cause fever and pulmonary infiltrates. We can use invasive and noninvasive methods to obtain specimens for microbiological diagnosis. All specimens need to be validated qualitatively and quantitatively.
