Abstract     Patients with end stage renal disease who are treated with one of the dialysis methods are usually immunosuppressed because of the retention of uremic toxins and comorbid states. Occurrence of infections is increased in dialysis population and infections are an important cause of mortality. The majority of infections in chronic dialysis patients are access-related: central venous catheter infections in hemodialysis patients and peritoneal catheter infections with peritonitis in peritoneal dialysis patients. There has been a rapid increase in the prevalence of antimicrobial resistance in recent years due to an excessive use of antibiotics in dialysis population. New guidelines and recommendations were issued to limit the spread of antimicrobial resistance.
