Abstract     Heterogeneous vancomycin-intermediate methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (hVISA/hVRSA) was isolated hom 77-year-old male patient who had been undergoing a long lasting therapy with vancomycin because of the infection with MRSA after coronary arteries bypass surgery. The hVISA strains were isolated in 2001 from surveillance cultures and were the first isolates detected in Slovenia. The MRSA isolates were resistant to penicillin, oxacillin, erythromycin, clindamycin, gentamicin, ciprofloxacin. Some strains were also resistant to rifampin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole and showed a high level of resistance to mupirocin. Prudent use of antibiotics, especially glycopeptides is strongly recommended to prevent such resistance.
