Abstract     The paper deals with a short explanation of the conceptual scheme, consequences of disease and impairments, disabilities and handicaps and their definitions according to the International Classification of Impairments, Disabilities and Handicaps . Presented are some goals of its use along with a short review of its use in Slovenia published in different professional articles. Stress is laid on the background of its revision process. In May 2001 the World Health Assembly of the WHO approved the final version of the new International Classification of Functioning, Disabilities and Health (ICF) as the successor of ICIDH. A bio - psycho - social model for a better understanding of man's functioning is presented, functioning and disability are umbrella terms. The article includes a resume of papers on the results of the initial experiences with the use of ICF in different fields in relation to rehabilitation medicine and rehabilitation professionals. ICF is being translated into Slovenian, founded has been also a national commission for the promotion of ICIDH.
