Abstract     Fungal infections, especialy candidiasis, are more frequent in intensive care units in comparison with other wards. Most important risk factors for the development of earrdidiasis in intensive eare units represent surgical procedures, central vascular catheters, parenetral feeding, severity of the disease, renal failure and broad-spectrum antibacterial therapy. Efficacy of antifungal prophylaxis with fluconazole in some groups of critieally ill patients has been demonstrated in some recent studies. Aspergillosis tpically affects severely immunocompromised patients. Since some cases of invasive aspergillosis were described in other intensive care patients as well preventive measures should be aplied in intensive care units.
