Abstract     This article presents an overview of payment methods and classification for rehabilitation care; some attention is also on the field of data collecting. It should be considered as starting point for discussion and promotion of good clinical practice and teamwork with introduction of clinical pathways. The method of payment of hospitals will be progressively revised over the next two or three years. General ideas about the changes have already been agreed, and some modifications are planned for acute inpatients in the 2003 budget. We propose that consideration be given to enhancing the way that rehabilitation services are counted, classified, and paid, beginning in 2004. This paper contains a few ideas about the changes that might be considered. We suggest that the first step should involve developing a common view about the opportunities to improve care practices. It seems likely that the main concern is allocative rather than productive efficiency. We therefore anticipate that there will be particular interest in the process of selection of patients for rehabilitation, and refining care practices through the use of clinical pathways. If so, revisions to funding should be defined specifically with these goals in mind, as shouid consideration of revisions in the routine data collected for management of patient care. The possibilities could be explored through a pilot study of the work of one or more rehabilitation teams, with the intention of developing some proposals for change across the entire range of rehabilitation services. If so, a plan for a pilot study will need to be developed in collaboration with experts from the selected teams.
