Abstract     Measurement of rehabilitation outcome after spinal cord injury (SCI) can be done from the viewpoint of impairment, activity (disability), participation (handicap) and quality of life. The most accurate way to document impairments in a person with SCI is by performing a standardized neurologic examination as endorsed by the International Standards for Neurological and Functional Classification of Spinal Cord Injury also commonly called the American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) guidelines. At the activity (disability) level after SCI some have used the existing measures which were developed for subjects with other pathologies, such as Barthel index, FIM. Others have developed new specific measures (Quadriplegia Index of Function, Spinal cord Independence Measure, Valutazione Funzionale Mielolesi, Walking Index for Spinal Cord Injury, Spinal Cord Injury Functional Ambulation Inventory, Capabilities of Upper Extremity Instrument). To assess participation - handicap after SCI, the most widely used is Craig Handicap Assessment and Reporting Technique. Other scales are also used.
