Abstract     Measurement of outcome after amputation can be done from the viewpoint of impairment, activity (disability) and participation (handicap) or from the viewpoint of technology, user satisfaction and quality of life. Measures of impairment, such as range of motion and muscle strength, are more important for the decision on the type of the prosthesis and its components than for the measurement of outcome. At the activity (disability) level after lowerlimb amputation, some authors have used the existing measures which were developed for subjects with other pathologies, such as Barthel Index, Frenchay Activities Index, FIM, PULSES profile. Others have developed measures which specify mobility, such as Amputee Activity Score, Locomotor Capabilities Index (LCI), Functional Measure for Amputees (FMA) developed by the Scottish Physiotherapy Amputee Research Group (SPARG). Some measures give more importance to the prosthesis and prosthetic services (Prosthetic Profile of the Amputee, Satisfaction with the prosthesis, Prosthesis Evaluation Questionnaire - PEQ, Prosthesis Evaluation Questionnaire and CIR/ RERC Prosthetics Users' Survey).
