Abstract     The article presents a review of cervical pain etiology for a better understanding of neck pain. Besides the clinical picture, it gives a review of clinical differential diagnoses of structures causing cervical pain. It emphasizes the role of good treatment of acute neck pain in order to prevent chronic pain leading to disability. According to the bio-psychosocial model, painful musculoskeletal dysfunction is connected with the beliefs and expectations of the patient. If those are positive, the outcome is good. If negative, psychological distress develops as anxiety and increased bodily awareness. Fear and uncertainty are felt, resulting in anger and depression. Beliefs about pain, coping strategy and psychological distress all affect what we do - the pain behavior; which occurs in a particular social setting. To achieve an objective assessment of patients with cervical pain, a visual analogue scale graded 110 is available for grading pain intensity, or the patient can draw the field on a human chart presenting painful body regions. On the physical plane, we can measure the active range of motion of the neck by a measuring tape (in centimeters) or by a technologicaly more sophisticated device with gravity and magnetic/compass goniometric aid (in degrees df movement). Disability or activity limitation of the patlent can be evaluated by one of the five establisheal questionnaires for evaluating the disability in activities of daily living due to cervical pain. The most evaluated test is the Neck Disability Index, modified from the wellknown Oswestry low back pain disabl!ity index. This questionnaire has been translated in to the Slovene language and is presented in the article. Among the five questionnares, the Bournemouth Questionnaire is an exception since it evaluates psychometric items in cervical pain patients. It covers the field of the bio psychosocial rnodel of participation limitation resulting from cervical pain.
