Abstract     In Introduction we deal with problematics of speech pathology according to schemes and diagnostics used at present in Slovenia and abroad. Presented is the epidemiology of speech pathology in (mentally) handicapped children. Given is the number of speech-impaired mentally handicapped children who receive speech therapy in rehabilitation institutions in region of Ljubljana, Slovenia, at the beginning of 1991. The result of our research work obtained by the analysis of questionnaires presented to the parents of children with mode rate or severe mental handicaps and to their therapists have confirmed our hypothesis: "Successful rehabilitation of mentally handicapped children depends on their ability to acquire basic verbal communication, or an alternative mode of communication in case if speech cannot be produced." Speech pathology of mentally handicapped is very complex. There fore 71 children with moderate or severe mental deficiency were sampled. Confirmed has been the hypothesis that children who are benefited from early speech stimuli, as well as those who receive regular and intensive speech therapy, exhibit better comprehension of speech, learer pronunciation and better motority of speech organs. Therefore their parents should be given an opportunity to cooperate with the therapist. The questionnaire revealed that all parents lack access to lectures, resources and instruments used in speech therapy. We found out that children with moderate and severe mental handicaps have much more problems at home and at the rehabilitation institution if they are not able to communicate. Our work has confirmed that many instruments and resource materials improve their motivation and results of speech therapy and therapy enhance quality of life of handicapped children and their integration into society.
