Abstract     The author deals with ethical decisions in children treated in pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). Discusses the indications for sending children to PICU in particular when their condition is hopeless. The referring pediatrician shares the responsibility for the outcome of treatment equally with the pediatric intensivist. In the author's view PICU can not be the place for dying or depositing hopeless cases. Determination of hopeless condition or terminal disease should be based on clinical experience rather than screening systems. Perlustrates ethical dilemmas in withholding and withdrawing of treatment. Advocates the necessity of continuous education of the medical and nursing personnel how to approach the parents and relatives of critically sick children in PICU.
