Abstract     Article discusses communication with bereaved relatives. Death usually evokes strong emotional reactions that should be acknowledged to break the bad news effectively. It stresses the value of accepting emotions expressed by relatives. It is widely recognized today that initial coping with bad news influences the process of grief. The article presents basic guidelines for breaking the bad news. As communication skills can be learned, it points out relevant elements of effective teaching methods. »Grief response and donation request workshopa might be an example where communication skills, necessary to break the bad news and ask for organ donation, could be acquired. At the end it mentions possible debriefing techniques for medical stuff.
